2008 AXA AchievementSM Scholarship Winners

 

AXA, in association with U.S. News & World Report, awarded $670,000 in college scholarships.

The winners, known as AXA Achievers, are students who demonstrate:

  • Ambition and drive
  • Determination to set and reach goals
  • Respect for self, family and community
  • Ability to succeed in college

Their achievements are recognized with two levels of scholarships awards:

  • 52 state scholarships (plus DC and Puerto Rico) of $10,000 each
  • 10 national scholarships (from selected 52 state recipients) of $15,000 each (making their total $25,000)

 

Introducing the incredible, inspiring and motivated 2008 National AXA Achievers:

Nathan Duran, Washington, DC

As a member of the Justice for DC Youth Coalition, Nathan raises awareness of the needs and issues surrounding incarcerated young people and ensures that the voices of
this neglected population are heard.

Rebecca Moran, Cape May Court House, NJ

Founded the Tri-State Read to Succeed Campaign to teach disadvantaged children to become more proficient at reading and has
raised money to purchase new books for children and school libraries.

Jordan Krell, Plankinton, SD

Designed and created Smart Swim: A Drowning Alert System, a programmable alarm to help prevent accidental drowning
deaths of children.

Katya Lyzhina, Sherwood, AR

Born with cerebral palsy in Russia and adopted at age 11, Katya started Hope’s Miracle to promote the adoption of older and
special needs children.

Jenna Machado, Boulder, CO

Founded Colie’s Closet, a suicide prevention organization for young people that encourages
community service and civic involvement.

Kathleen McGlynn, Belleville, IL

Researched and developed Yummies For Sensitive Tummies, a website to help kids with highly restrictive diets -- complete with an
accompanying cookbook of useful recipes that meet their needs.

Greyson Gregory, Branford, CT

Started a free youth volunteer resource and internet portal, StudentVolunteerLINK.com,
to connect students with non-profit volunteer opportunities, community organizations and initiatives.

William Payne, Louisville, KY

Championed awareness of children’s needs and community concerns as an active member of Jack and Jill of America, and conducted his
own neighborhood clothing drive to benefit homeless men.

Keshav Rao, Omaha, NE

Established the Practical English Program (PREP) to help native Spanish speakers learn
conversational English through a unique, bilingual six-week curriculum.

Katie Radosevic, Cornville, AZ

Promotes sustainable living to lessen our footprint on the environment through manufacturing and wholesaling Goat Milk Soap in her eco-friendly dairy, intense community involvement and go-green initiatives.
