Indexed Universal Life Insurance

Life Insurance Protection, Cash Value Accumulation Potential, Downside Protection

Indexed universal life insurance1 combines life insurance protection with equity-linked accumulation potential. It has some of the same features as universal life, like premium flexibility, but also offers more growth potential, but with less risk than variable universal life insurance.

The equity index-linked option(s) provide upside potential for cash value accumulation – up to certain Growth Cap Rates. And, downside protection is offered by a floor. Depending on the indexed universal life policy you select, this floor may eliminate the impact of decreases in the value of the indices.

  • Premium payments are flexible. After your initial payment, you can make additional payments at virtually any time and in any amount (subject to certain minimums and maximums).
  • Your policy continues as long as there is enough cash value to cover monthly insurance charges.
  • You can allocate premiums in index-linked option(s), as well as a guaranteed interest account.   Generally, indexed options are linked to widely-known indices, such as the S&P 500® or the Russell 2000®.* Usually, durations are one-year, but can be longer.
  • Indexed options may provide long-term growth potential, tax-deferred earnings, and there may be the opportunity to make tax-free transfers among indexed options when the policy offers more than one indexed option.

Advantages of Indexed Universal Life Insurance

  • Growth Potential with Downside Protection – Interest on amounts allocated to the indexed options will be credited based on the performance of the underlying indices of the options selected, subject to a cap and a participation rate.   However, if performance of these indices is poor, your life insurance cash value is safe as indexed options will be credited with at least 0%.
  • Flexibility for Your Budget - You can determine the amount and timing of premium payments, within certain limits.
  • Flexibility for Changing Needs -You can increase or decrease the Face Amount.  And, many indexed universal life policies offer a host of riders.
  • Diversification - In some cases, you may choose to allocate money at segment maturity to other index-linked options or the GIA.

Disadvantages of Indexed Universal Life Insurance

  • Flexibility to skip premiums can lead to policy funding problems.
  • Your investment options are more limited than those offered by a variable universal life insurance policy and, depending on your policy; you cannot move money from one indexed option segment to another until segment maturity.
  • Poor indexed option performance can lead to increased premiums – or cause the policy lapse.
  • There are fewer guarantees than whole life insurance.

[1] Indexed universal life insurance as used here refers to policies that have not been registered with U.S Securities and Exchange Commission.

[2] Increases may require evidence of insurability and decreases may result in the imposition of pro rata surrender charges.  Often there are death benefit and rider options to choose from as well.
