GEORGE MARTIN HONORED FOR COMMUNITY SERVICE WITH AXA EQUITABLE'S 2008 DARWIN DAVIS AWARD
New York, NY - June 5, 2008 - AXA Equitable Life Insurance Company has announced that George Martin, Vice President of Sports Marketing, is the 2008 recipient of the company's Darwin Davis Award for Community Service. The announcement was made by Christopher "Kip" Condron, Chairman and CEO of AXA Equitable.
AXA Equitable created the Darwin Davis Award for Community Service to celebrate employees who demonstrate selfless and extraordinary contributions to the betterment of their local communities, inspiring others to follow their models. The award is named for the late AXA Equitable Senior Vice President Darwin Davis in honor of his long-standing dedication to the company and his community.
Mr. Martin was among 28 nominees for this award, all nominated by AXA Equitable employees and financial professionals. He was selected as the winner by an awards committee also comprised of employees and financial professionals from across all areas of the company. Mr. Martin's nomination exemplified his ongoing commitment and dedication to the community.
"The Darwin Davis Award was created to recognize employees who demonstrate extraordinary contributions to public service, community development, and volunteerism," said Mr. Condron. "George is an incredibly generous man and has used his celebrity and contacts in the sports world for decades to help others, so it was no surprise that he was nominated and ultimately selected by his peers to receive this award."
Currently, Mr. Martin is on a leave of absence from AXA Equitable and engaged in his remarkable charitable initiative, "a Journey for 9/11." He is walking more than 3,000 miles across the U.S. - from New York to California - to raise money that will be used to provide health care for the rescue and recovery workers who rushed to Ground Zero to help in the aftermath of the 9/11 attacks.
In honor of Mr. Martin's selection as a winner of the Darwin Davis Award, the AXA Foundation will make a $10,000 grant to the charitable organization of his choice - Mr. Martin has already chosen "a Journey for 9/11" to receive this grant
Mr. Martin was a defensive end for the New York Giants from 1975 to 1988. During his professional football career, he was the team captain for the 1986 Super Bowl Champion Giants, and president of the NFL Players Association. Mr. Martin began his business career in 1988, and joined AXA Equitable in 2004 as Vice President of Sports Financial Services.
Mr. Martin has spent most of his life in service to his community. He serves as the co-founder and an executive board member of Minority Athletes Networking - a not for profit organization committed to cultivating inner city youths. He also serves as a board member of the NFL Youth Football initiative - focused on molding, teaching and instructing NFL coaches, facilities and players. In 1986, he was recognized by the NFL Hall of Fame as its Humanitarian of the Year and was the Byron Wizzer-White award recipient for his contributions both on the field and in his community. Mr. Martin was recognized by former President George H.W. Bush for his humanitarian efforts in 1987.
For his charitable efforts, Mr. Martin was named one of ABC News' "Persons of the Year" in 2007. In December 2007, he received the second annual and prestigious Heisman Humanitarian Award from the Heisman Trophy Trust.
