Annuities are long-term retirement planning products that can help protect you against the risk of outliving your savings during retirement. In essence, annuities are contractual agreements in which payments(s) are made to an insurance company, which agrees to pay out an income or a lump sum amount at a later date. There are contract limitations and fees and charges associates with annuities, which include, but are not limited to, mortality and expense risk charges, sales and surrender charges, administrative fees, and charges for optional benefits. While fixed annuities offer tax-deferred growth at defined rates, variable annuities contain more risk, but offer the potential for greater growth through investment in a variety of investment portfolios.
Variable annuity and variable life insurance subaccounts fluctuate with changes in market conditions. When surrendered, the principal may be worth more or less than the original amount invested.
Withdrawals from annuity products and IRA accounts are subject to normal income tax treatment and if taken prior to age 59½ may be subject to an additional 10% federal income tax penalty. Withdrawals from annuities may also be subject to a contractual withdrawal charge.
